Designing optimal scenarios of nutrient loading reduction in a WFD/MSFD perspective by using passive tracers in a biogeochemical-3D model of the English Channel/Bay of Biscay area ArchiMer
Menesguen, Alain; Dussauze, Morgan; Dumas, Franck.
In most cases, eutrophication of a coastal zone is a multi-source phenomenon. The questions often raised by authorities about these different sources are: what are their marine area of influence and their respective role in the eutrophication process? A first answer to these questions is proposed for the bay of Biscay-English Channel French coasts, using a hydrodynamical model alone with a passive tracer for each of the main 45 French watersheds of the domain. The statistical marine receiving area of each river is then defined over a whole decade (2000–2010) by using different percentiles (respectively the 10th, 50th, 90th ones) of the distribution of tracer values in each mesh of the grid: this enables to map the dilution areas of each river plume...

- This study (granted up to 50% by the French Office for Water and Aquatic Environments ONEMA) aimed at determining by modelling (hydrodynamical/biogeochemical ECOMARS3D model) the marine "receiving basins" of the main tributaries to the French waters of the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay. Knowing the respective part of each of these marine "receiving basins" in winter nutrient distribution, some optimal scenarios of nutrient loading reduction can be computed for nitrate or phosphate in order to bring back any marine water to the Good Ecological Status regarding eutrophication, at the best efficiency/cost ratio. - The study encompasses 45 watersheds (or clusters of neighboring watersheds) which have been retained because of their sizes and flow...

Impact of winter storms on sediment erosion in the Rhone River prodelta and fate of sediment in the Gulf of Lions (North Western Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Dufois, Francois; Verney, Romaric; Le Hir, Pierre; Dumas, Franck; Charmasson, Sabine.
In this study a three-dimensional sediment transport model was developed. The model accounts for both current and wave forcing on the sediment and was implemented over the Gulf of Lions. A two-way nesting technique was used to focus on the Rhone River prodelta which is considered as a sink for riverine sediment. In addition, to understand the resuspension of trapped sediment over the Rhone prodelta, an in situ experiment, called SCOPE, was conducted during the winter 2007/2008. The experiment consisted of measuring hydro-sedimentary parameters using a mooring station comprising a current profiler (ADCP) and an altimeter (acoustic transducer) located in the eastern part of the Rhone prodelta. The three-dimensional transport model was validated using these...

MASSILIA: Modélisation de la baie de MArSeILLe : Influence des apports Anthropiques de la métropole sur l’écosystème marin ArchiMer
Pinazo, Christel; Fraysse, Marion; Doglioli, Andrea; Faure, Vincent Martin; Pairaud, Ivane; Petrenko, Anne; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Tronczynski, Jacek; Verney, Romaric; Yohia, Christophe.
In the framework of sustainable development, the anthropogenic impact of large coastal cities on the marine ecosystem is a key issue. This project aimed to improve our knowledge in marine ecosystem response to the anthropogenic supplies (from rivers, sewage outflows and atmosphere) from large cities. In particular, the goal is to underline how the physical forcing decreases or increases the anthropogenic impact on the coastal ecosystem and the assessment of the chemical contaminant (PCB) inputs (from city to sea) and exports (from mid-sea to open sea).

Modelling of circulation and dispersion of radioactive pollutants in the Japan Sea ArchiMer
Cetina, Matjaz; Rajar, Rudi; Povinec, Pavel.
A large amount of radioactive waste was deposited in the Japan Sea, at a depth of about 3 000 m by the former Soviet Union. Research was carried out to determine to what extent the surface waters could be contaminated by possible leakage from the dumped containers. A three-dimensional, non-linear, baroclinic model was used to determine the circulation and pollutant dispersion. The computations were carried out in the diagnostic mode, taking into account data on winter and summer temperature and salinity distribution. Thermohaline forcing due to strong temperatures and salinity gradients is the main forcing factor influencing the bottom circulation. Wind forcing and the inflow/outflow surface currents were also taken into account. The simulated velocity...

Modelling the Karenia mikimotoi bloom that occurred in the western English Channel during summer 2003 ArchiMer
Vanhoutte Brunier, Alice; Fernand, L; Menesguen, Alain; Lyons, S; Gohin, Francis; Cugier, Philippe.
Observations from space and in situ from the R.V Corystes 8/03 Cruise show that a massive Karenia mikimotoi bloom occured during summer 2003 in the western English Channel. Due to exceptional climatoligical conditions that occured in June 2003, the installation of a very strong thermocline enhanced the development of a massive bloom over 1 million cells 1(-1) in the Central English Channel. This paper presents the application of a mathematical model of this species, previously developed in for the Bay of Biscay, into a general 3D model of the primary production of the English Channel and southern Bight of the North Sea. Allelopathic interactions exerted by K. mikimotoi on other phytoplankton species and the role of agitation in the mortality of this...

Wave- and current-induced bottom shear stress distribution in the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Dufois, Francois; Garreau, Pierre; Le Hir, Pierre; Forget, P.
Simulations of both currents and waves were performed throughout the year 2001 to assess the relative contribution of each to their overall erosive potential on the Gulf of Lions shelf. Statistical analysis of bottom shear stress (BSS) was compared to sediment grain-size distribution on the bottom. The hydrodynamic features of the bottom layer coincide with the distribution of surficial sediments, and three areas with different hydro-sedimentary characteristics were revealed. (i) The sandy inner shelf ( < 30 m) area is a high-energy-wave dominated area but may be subjected to intense current-induced BSS during on-shore winds along the coast and during continental winds mainly in the up-welling cells. (ii) The middle shelf (30-100 m) is a low-energy...
